Jarrad Branthwaite was then denied by a superb reaction save from City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega with the second half less than two minutes old.
But it was the reigning Premier League champions who struck the opener six minutes from time, when Nico O’Reilly turned in from inside the six-yard box after Matheus Nunes’ cut-back.
Substitute Mateo Kovacic then thumped home a second for the visitors in stoppage time.
